Scalloped Edged Hat

I have decided to start stash busting and make some space to buy new wool.  (My husband only knows about the stash busting part so far…)

These two hats used up the leftover heather I had from my Nanny’s diamond scarf (so soft!) and most of a ball of cream I also had lying around.  Not sure yet which one I prefer, the heart is cute and the stripes are a lot of fun.

If you want to make the stripy hat, I used this pattern from Linda Permann.  I changed colour every two rows once the first row of shells was made.  I think this shows the lovely stitch off nicely!

Scalloped Edged Hat Pattern

Use double knitting wool and a size 4mm hook.  You will need less than one skein (116m) plus some extra for the trim and heart.  I used Wendy Merino dk wool.  This works up a hat suitable for a toddler (43 cm around).

Start with the main hat colour by making a magic ring and ch1.

Round 1: 8hdc into ring, join with a sl-st.

Round 2: ch2, 2hdc in each st around, join with a slip st (16 sts)

Round 3: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (24sts)

Round 4: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc twice), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (32sts)

Round 5: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc 3 times), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (40sts)

Round 6: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc 4 times), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (48sts)

Round 7: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc 5 times), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (56sts)

Round 8: ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc 6 times), repeat () around, join with a sl-st (64sts)

Round 9-16: ch2, dc in each st around, join with a sl-st (64 sts)

When joining round 16, swap to the trim colour yarn.  Do not break the main colour yarn, you can carry it behind the work and save yourself some weaving in.

Round 17: ch1, sc in each st around.  Swap to the main colour to join with a sl-st (64 sts)

Round 18: ch1 (counts as sc), *sk 1 st, 5dc in next st, sk 1 st, sc, repeat from * to end joining with a sl-st into the first chain (use a magic join if you prefer).

Fasten off and weave in the ends.  To make the heart motif see my next post.
