I have been wearing this Linen Stitch Cowl and Linen Stitch Gloves set a lot so far this winter.  It seems to go with a lot of things in my wardrobe and is snuggly and comfy to wear.  I’ve been getting annoyed when the weather is too warm to wear them!

I really loved the yarn I chose for the original red and cream version of this set.  As I was making it I thought it would be interesting to see how it would work with a more strongly variegated yarn and plain contrast (you can read more about my thoughts on using variegated yarns in this blog post).

The variegated colourway (called “Capricorn”) combines with the black for a softer striped effect than the more high contrast original.  It is the same yarn as I used previously – Manos Del Uruguay Silk Blend DK, with a 5mm crochet hook.  I quite like how from a distance you can pick out the stripes of black and individual stitches of colour, but on closer inspection it looks flecked and slightly random.

This cowl was made as a birthday gift for my Dad since he liked my red and cream one when I was making it.  The wool will make it warmer than this cotton zig-zag one, which he still wears, though I hope this one will become a favourite too.

Have you tried this cowl or gloves in a different colourway?  I love to look at the projects made using my patterns on Ravelry so let me know if yours is up there!

And if you are panic crocheting last minute Christmas gifts, this is a good pattern to try as it’s unisex,  pretty quick and can easily be done whilst watching a favourite Christmas movie (or two or three).  And eating mince pies of course :)

  2. I tried to make a cowl once but I didn’t find it a useful or comfortable garment, so I reused the yarn. I like the linen stitch with the mix of plain and variegated yarn though. Great effect!
